Equal Opportunity Vs. Zero Opportunity
In current society, women are given almost all of the opportunities that men are. We had to fight for this right, but now that we have it, we can do anything! There are women in congress, women who are powerful CEOs of companies, and women who are ministers of different churches. Women can chose to go to work, or to be a stay at home mother. Women can go to a university to get a degree, can become doctors, lawyers, or anything they wish to be. For the women in Thousand Splendid Suns, their role is much different. Women are an important part of society, but mainly for bearing children in order to carry out a family's name. Most of the women are treated as though they are property, as if their only purpose is to cook, clean and bear children. Some of the men, such as Tariq's father treats his wife with respect and kindness. However, men like Rasheed are abusive and violent with their wives and do not have respect for them. In comparison, women in America have come a long way from the way they were treated no more than a hundred years ago, while in places such as Afghanistan, women to this day still have very little rights and are treated similarly to the way they are in Thousand Splendid Suns.

Nature of Birth
In Yukio Mashima's short story, Swaddling Clothes, a graphic birth scene is depicted. An at home nurse for a couple's baby begins to go into child labor in their home. She gives birth to her baby on the floor on a blanket. A doctor had arrived after the baby had been born. The doctor wrapped the infant in newspapers and left him on the floor. Toshiko is the only one that saw the infant in such a state which made her feel so terrible for the child. She felt that if this is how the infants very first minuets on earth were, his life had no chance in improving. She picked the baby up and swaddled the infant in blankets. A person's birth can effect them for the rest of their life because infants cannot decide who our parents are and what social class we will be born into. How you are born is most likely the life style you will live when you are grown. Mothers, in reality, hold the same fears as Toshiko. Mothers only want the best lives for their children and want to be able to provide their children with all the necessities of life. If baby's are born into a family with a difficult life, a difficult life that baby will live.

About Me
I am a senior in high school that cannot wait to go to college and do big things with my life. I am Varsity Cheer leading Captain and love my team to death. I am involved in numerous clubs that help to serve and better the community. I absolutely love traveling and doing new things. I do not know where I'd be without my family, friends, and boyfriend. I listen to all different types of music and usually can find songs and bands in every genre that I enjoy listening to. How can you chose one favorite movie when there are so many great ones to chose from? However, some of my favorite are The Notebook (because I'm a sap for a good love story), Taken (because who doesn't love Liam Neeson?), and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I am writing this to let you know a little bit about who I am and what means the most to me. I am hoping to get a good understanding of different cultures and how they vary through this class. As we embark on our learning experience, I leave you with this comment: 186 days until graduation. :)
